That’s a question I hear quite a lot from my entrepreneur clients—and from random people I meet who find out what I do.

Now, some ideas may seem like winners right off the bat. And they may be. But you don’t want to invest a ton of time and money based solely on an assumption. Because we all know what happens when you assume anything.

So before you go forth launching your latest thing, you need some evidence that it is something people are interested in. And more importantly, that there are enough people who want it—and would be willing and able to buy it for a price that keeps you in business.

That means doing a bit of research, and maybe even testing the market. Just because you aren’t a big corporation with a ginormous budget burning a hole in your pocket, doesn’t mean you can’t do your due diligence.

Now, if you’ve created something based on solving your own problems or filling your own needs you’re probably off to a good start. Ditto if lots of your friends or family members have told you they want whatever it is when you show it to them.

But you still want to do a little research on the Internet, at the library, or even the local magazine rack.

Here are five questions you need to answer:

1) Does anyone else already sell or offer what you have in mind (or something really similar)?

If so, this is a great sign. Because it means chances are good someone out there is buying it.

If no one offers what you want to sell, this is a red flag. Because instead of just explaining why they should buy from you instead of someone else, you have to explain why they should want it in the first place.

However, it’s not a deal breaker. As long as you can confirm there is an interested market for what you want to sell, and that it solve a pressing pain or problem, there’s no reason not to move forward. Because if you can be the first—and take over a good share of the market—you’ll be in a terrific position as it takes off.

2) How many people sell it?

Competition is good. Too much competition can be a problem. But it’s a fine line.

If the market for your idea is enormous then there is plenty of room for competition. And if you have a unique twist, benefit or feature to what you are offering, then competition is not a huge concern. You just have to market your idea to highlight the key difference so you stand out from the crowd.

3) What, exactly, are they selling and how does it compare to what you are offering?

Make a list of the features and benefits of your idea, then a list of your competition’s features and benefits. That way you can easily see what makes your product, service or business different or better.

4) Who are they selling to?

You can get a good idea of who your target market might be simply by looking at who your competition is selling to. This is not to say there aren’t other potential markets. Or that you definitely want to sell to the same people. But it helps to know who is buying now.

5) How much are they selling it for?

You don’t have to sell for the same price. But if you plan to ask for more money than the competition, you need to be prepared to sell the value of your offering. And to show prospects why it’s better, different or more effective/valuable than what the competitors are selling.

The last thing you want to do is sell for less just to be the lowest price. Thanks to the Internet, someone out there can almost always beat your price. Plus, it’s all too easy to undercut the competition, only to discover you’re not making enough to cover your costs—or even sustain your business.

Of course there are never any guarantees. And this is just a starting point. But once you’ve done all your research, you should have a reasonable idea as to whether or not your product, service or business has a shot.

There are a number to choose from under the general headings of low-carb, high-protein, high-fat diets. The problem with much of the current evidence is the small number of people enrolled in short-term trials. To be able to make general statements, there should be a statistically significant number of participants and the trials should last a reasonable period of time for the full effects to be measured.

With dieting there’s also the problem that up to half the participants drop out of most trials. Just published is a new trial that lasted for two years. Called DIRECT (Dietary Intervention Randomized Controlled Test), it compared a Mediterranean, calorie-restricted diet based on the Harvard Medical School guide to healthy eating; a low-fat, calorie-restricted diet based on the American Heart Association’s guidelines; and a low-carb, non-restricted-calorie diet based on Atkins.

The participants were aged between 40 and 65 and had a BMI of at least 27, or an existing diagnosis of diabetes or heart disease. The average was people with a BMI of 31 with 86% men. Over two years, 92% stayed with the low-fat diet, 85% with the Mediterranean diet, and 78% with the low-carb diet. Weight was lost consistently in the first six months, with the new weight then stabilizing.

Those in the low-fat group lost the least weight with the loss by the Mediterranean and low-carb groups broadly similar with participants dropping two BMI levels. Everyone lost about 2 inches in waist circumference. But the Mediterranean and low-carb diets showed good reductions in blood pressure and improvements in metabolic effects making them the preferred approaches, i.e. there were real, measurable health benefits and not just weight loss.

The recommendation is therefore for doctors or nutritionists to discuss dieting preferences with you, aiming to agree a strategy suited to your tastes. In selecting the diet, it may be that an Atkins approach is best for those who find it difficult to restrict their calorie intake. No one should approach this decision with closed minds. It’s a case of starting with one program and then varying it to find the combination of foods you find easiest to accept for the long-term where the greatest health benefits are earned. In clinical trials, it also performed well, helping participants lose an average 10% of their body weight. While Twitter itself is serving up search results on Twitter.com, Google is also indexing Twitter profiles and updates (tweets). Anyone who’s interested in search engine optimization is likely to wonder at Twitter’s place in the SEO toolkit.

I won’t profess to be a Twitter expert here. But this weekend I took some more time to dig into the Twitter-SEO question. In that quest, I’ve discovered a few easy things you can do to add SEO power to your Twitter presence.

1. Tweet new content to accelerate indexing.

Just added a new blog post? Issued a press release? Of course it makes sense to tweet it. But what about a new page or section on your website?

While new blog posts and press releases (depending on distribution platform) tend to show up in SERPs quickly even without tweeting, traditional web content has been known to take weeks, even months, to show any significant ranking results. Entirely new websites sometimes take six months to a year to build up solid search rankings.

Some SEO practitioners have been experimenting with Twitter’s usefulness in getting new content indexed and ranked quickly. It may be working (see this Twitter discussion at WebmasterWorld).

No one seems to know exactly how this can result in new content being indexed, as Twitter stamps all tweeted links with the standard no-follow tag. One possible explanation is that your tweets may result in links popping up on other web properties. If you’ve got an active group of like-minded followers, they may just be interested enough to write about your newly posted link in their blog, for example.

Regardless, it may be worth using anchor text in the URL you include in your tweet. (Just create an account to use the custom naming option with a URL shortening service like bit.ly If you want to use more than one word, separate with a hyphen. Just in case you didn’t know, search engines do not index shortened URLs but index and pass PageRank to the actual URLs instead.)

Reminder: Just don’t make all your tweets about your own content – nobody wants to follow a prima dona I’m-so-great-it’s-all-about-me kind of tweep. Remember to share other interesting items, ask questions, and tweet facts that will provide value and interest to your followers.

2. Optimize your Twitter profile page.

Google, Yahoo, Bing, and Ask all rank Twitter profile pages in search results. If you’re on Twitter and interested in gaining followers, you’ll want your page to show up. Here are a few tips to optimize your Twitter account page.

* Choose a username that relates to your area of expertise. This username forms part of your page title tag and URL.
* Consider your account name, too. This can be different from your username and is also part of the page title.
* Your Twitter bio becomes your meta description tag, so optimize accordingly.
* Build links to your Twitter page. Link to your Twitter profile from your global footer or another similar spot on your website and promote your Twitter account whenever appropriate.
* Follow others in your direct line of business. It may impact how relevant your account appears for the terms you’ve included in your username, account name and description.
* It’s also been suggested that having a lot of (related) followers can boost PageRank for your profile. Regardless, having a lot of followers brings plenty of non-SEO benefits your way, so of course work on growing and retaining a quality following.

Tip: Like much you do in SEO, doing good for your Twitter followers should come before anything you do for pure SEO impact. Remember, Twitter carries another set of benefits that you should be aiming for BEFORE you even try to build more SEO into it. Like anything worth building rankings for, your Twitter profile page should offer value to the people who land there.)

3. Optimize your tweets.

Your tweets can help you gain more exposure for your profile, the content you link to, and your brand in general when you optimize your tweets for findability.

The title tag for a tweet is around 42 characters: the first 30 characters or so of the tweet together with the username of the account tweeting it. So make sure any keywords appear as close as possible to the front end.

When retweeting, it’s better to have the RT@username placed at the end of the post, rather than the start, as it keeps any carefully placed keywords near the beginning. Follow this style and others may pick up on it, too, when retweeting your updates. You may also want to keep your tweet to 120 characters so people will have space to add RT@username without chopping off part of your original tweet.

Don’t forget that you also want to optimize your tweets for findability on the Twitter search engine itself. Use the hashtag (#) symbol when you post, next to the topic your post relates to. Keep in mind that some SEOs caution against overuse of the hashtag.

So, here is the step by step process for installing Joomla on your own website.

1. Log in to your hosting account’s Control Panel. This should usually be http://www.mydomainname.com/controlpanel, where ‘mydomainnane’ is replaced your own website that is hosted on that hosting account.

5. Choose where on your website you want to install Joomla. Will it be on your main domain, an existing sub-domain or a new not-yet-existing sub-domain or directory? Indicate it in this part of the installation process.

6. Fill out other required fields that are required to smoothly install Joomla on the site. This includes creating an Admin username and password. Don’t choose ‘Admin’ and ‘password’ as your username and password. Many people do this and have been hacked. Also, fill out the site name or main keyword, email address and other details here.

Then click the “Install Joomla” button.

7. On the next page, make sure that all the needed information is correct. Also, note down your Admin username, password and backend page (the one that ends with /administrator).

Finally, hit that “Finish Installation” of a button.

Voila! You have just learned how to install Joomla on your website. This should usually take only 1 or 2 minutes at most. After all, all you are doing is just hitting buttons, except for when choosing a username, etc.
