We’ve known for quite some time that eating dark chocolate can lower blood pressure and help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Chocolate is made from plants, which means it contains many of the health benefits of dark vegetables. These benefits are from flavonoids, which act as antioxidants, protecting the body from aging caused by free radicals, which can cause damage that leads to heart disease. Dark chocolate contains a large number of antioxidants.
Eating more dark chocolate can help lower blood pressure, researchers say.

I personally adore milk chocolate, even though, according to studies, it has shown no significant positive impact on health.
Apparently, milk may interfere with the absorption of antioxidants from chocolate, and may therefore negate the potential health benefits that can be derived from eating moderate amounts of dark chocolate. At least, I can subscribe to the theory that it makes you a little happier, and happiness, they say, leads to longer, healthier life.

Studies have shown, Americans eat an average of 14 pounds of chocolate per year!

No wonder, since eating chocolate causes an increase in the production of endorphins. These are chemicals that make us feel happy and are found naturally in our bodies, therefore if we eat chocolate we have an increase in these ‘feel good’ chemicals.
Some experts also believe that due to those chemicals contained in chocolate and their effects on the brain a cycle of ‘the more you have, the more you want to have’ begins, thus developing an addiction.

Well, that might be true. I can hardly imagine a week without a piece of chocolate. But in the end, isn’t that what life was meant for – getting a little addicted to things?..

The Placebo Effect

If you give sugar pills to a group of patients and tell them that these pills are going to cure them, some of them will actually get better. This is known in the medical world as the placebo effect. Every doctor, nurse and medical student knows about it, but no-one has been able to explain it.

To put it simply, the placebo effect means that if you believe a certain treatment will work for you, it usually does.

Let me give you an example.

Forty years ago, a young heart surgeon from Seattle by the name of Leonard Cobb conducted an unusual experiment. He performed a number of fake surgeries on patients suffering from angina. Instead of performing real surgeries, he just made the incision and then stitched it back together. He didn’t actually do anything that could offer any kind of cure, but surprisingly, 90% of the patients reported that the procedure helped. The sham operations proved to be just as effective as the real ones.

Isn’t that amazing? The patients were not cured by the surgeries – they were cured by their belief in the surgery. Here are a some more examples:

In one study, doctors eliminated warts by using the power of belief. They painted them with ordinary red dye and told the patients that when the color wears off, the warts will disappear.

In a study of asthmatics, researchers found that they could produce dilation of the airways by telling people they were inhaling bronchodilators, even when they weren’t.

With the use of the brain imagery techniques, doctors were able to show that thoughts and beliefs can actually cause the body to undergo actual biological changes.

The fact is, that if we truly believe in something, we have the ability to cure (or even hurt) ourselves. This is a well known fact in today’s medicine. Herbert Benson from Harvard University showed that the placebo effect works in as much as 60-90% of diseases, including angina pectoris, bronchial asthma, herpes simplex, and duodenal ulcers.

On the other hand, the currently popular law of attraction claims that if you truly believe into something, you can ‘attract’ it into your life. Make it your reality through the power of belief. So if you truly believe that a certain treatment will make you better, the law of attraction states that it will.

Apparently, when it comes to our own bodies, the law of attraction is nothing more than some version of the placebo effect. In fact, some people would go as far as to claim that the placebo effect itself is a definite proof for the effectiveness of the law of attraction. While this is, in my opinion, taking it a bit too far, it is interesting to note that the law of attraction does in fact, at least partially, work.

Both the placebo effect and the law of attraction could and probably should be used in medicine. Countless clinical studies have shown the effectiveness of the placebo effect and just dismissing it because it’s not a ‘real’ medicine would be wrong. There is however one problem.

If a patient knows that all he’s getting is a sugary pill, there is no easy way for him to convince himself that the treatment will actually work. Consequently, the treatment will inevitably fail. If, on the other hand, we decide to lie to the patient and tell him that what he’s getting is the actual cure, we are facing a major ethical dilemma (not to mention a lawsuit).

Because of this problem, the placebo effect and the law of attraction are currently not being used in any conventional medicine. What could possibly be the most versatile of all cures – the ultimate ‘magic pill’ – is being ignored since none of us has managed to figure out how to use it. We can only hope that the current enthusiasm surrounding the law of attraction will bring us some new insight and possibly show us a different approach to harnessing this powerful principle.

Meg Whitman, an Internet pioneer, who had credited with helping turn a Web site used for trading Beanie Babies into a multibillion-dollar company with 15,000 employees, e-Bay, has been unable to control her own name online. What began as an irritant has evolved into a distracting legal spat as she explores a run for California governor.

A Santa Monica man has registered at least five Internet domains with Whitman’s name, prompting her to sue him in federal court in an attempt to get them back before her anticipated 2010 campaign. Tom Hall beat Whitman’s legal and political experts to the Web sites www.megwhitmanforgovernor.com, www.whitmanforgovernor.com, www.whitman2010.com, www.meg2010.com and www.megwhitman2010.com. He registered them in January and March 2008, after news stories reported her as a potential candidate for the Republican nomination.

More recently, Hall registered seven Whitman-related campaign committee names with the California Secretary of State’s office. Attorneys for Whitman lost an arbitration hearing before the World Intellectual Property Association, which ruled in December that Whitman’s name is not famous enough to prove she has her own unique brand.

Whitman sued Hall in U.S. District Court in San Jose on Dec. 31, alleging he is violating federal anti-cybersquatting laws. She also claims his actions violate the California Political Cyberfraud Abatement Act, which is intended to protect would-be political candidates from similar tactics.

Hall, a Democrat who described himself as a paid political writer and media consultant, said he registered the domain names for less than $10 apiece. “All along, I had no idea what I was going to do with these,” he said. “I just thought it was kind of funny.”

He said Whitman never called him to ask for the Web sites or even offer him money. Instead, he said her Washington, D.C.-based attorneys wrote him a letter calling him a cybersquatter and threatening to sue him for as much as $100,000 if he didn’t turn them over.

He noted that he bought the domain names after news articles in which Whitman speculated about her own political future. “You would think she’d be smart enough to buy the domain before she tells everyone she’s thinking about running for governor,” he said.

Instead, the former Silicon Valley CEO is likely spending anywhere from $50,000 to $200,000 in her legal quest to gain control of the Whitman Web sites, said Frederick Felman, chief marketing officer of MarkMonitor, a San Francisco-based firm that helps companies and people protect their name online. Hall, 50, said he might have given the domains to Whitman for free if she had asked.

Henry Gomez, a spokesman for Whitman, said her attorneys initially contacted Hall “to try to work something out,” but he never responded to e-mail or telephone messages. “Mr. Hall does not return our calls, so we have not had an opportunity to talk to him,” Gomez said. “We don’t understand what Mr. Hall’s approach is. But if he is open to a discussion, we’d be happy to talk to him.”

Whitman, 52, made a fortune as head of eBay from 1998 until early last year, when she left the company to test her affinity for politics, first as finance chairwoman for Mitt Romney and then as a national co-chair of John McCain’s presidential campaign.

Her lawsuit claims Hall is a professional cybersquatter who has registered dozens of domain names related to famous people or institutions. He’s even registered at least three in case Gov. Arnold Schwarenegger’s wife, Maria Shriver, a Democrat, decides to run for governor in 2010.

Hall acknowledged he owns more than 1,000 domain names but said he mostly registers them for fun, as a sort of Internet collector. He said he makes very little money from them and cannot afford to hire an attorney.

Hall ao registered the names of seven committees with the California Secretary of State’s office, allowing him to legally run a political campaign and accept donations. He hopes his campaign – either an opposition campaign or a parody, he hasn’t decided – will prevent Whitman’s attorneys from harassing him. “I hope she fails miserly in her race for governor, and if this is how she treats people – hiring law firms outside of the state of California and then running for governor – it’s insane,” Hall said.

The body that oversees California’s campaign finance regulations, the Fair Political Practices Commission, is concerned about Hall’s committee registrations. Executive Director Roman Porter said the committee is investigating whether he violated any campaign finance laws. (source AP)

In the race of The US presidential nomination of the Democratic party, Barack Obama, is unbeatable. His rival, Hillary R. Clinton, finally had to confess that her contender is leading the race and thus to represent the party for the US president candidate on November 4. Obama’s winning is then cheerfully welcome by public all around the world. Everybody feels happy with such a phenomenon realizing that during the Bush’s administration, the world order is under threat and full of terror. The hatred Bush spreads all over the world ignites those who so far have lived under the US hegemony and interference to awaken and defend themselves by attacking the US and its aligns’ properties and facilities. Since then, such a self-defense is called terrorism.

The phenomenon of Barack Obama has created “Obama euphoria” all around the world. The euphoria is not only to show people’s excitement finding out that Obama has come out as the president candidate but also to expect a different world, the world that is full of smile, hospitality, collaboration, equality, peace and harmony. The world’s desire is real and can not be neglected. Otherwise, the world will again curse the USA.

Van Basten is young while Hiddink is old and the two men are the good analogy for Barack Obama and John McCain.

Marco Van Basten who has amazed the soccer mania all over the world by showing his tactic and strategy of total football finally must bend his knee before Guss Hiddink, a veteran coach. Again, age, experience and maturity or mental seem to matter in such a case. Barack Obama must then analyze and learn from the phenomenon and the figure of Guss Hiddink to find out a good tactic and strategy to beat John McCain on November 4.

I am Barack Obama

I was fortunate to be able to grow up seeing America from varied viewpoints. My childhood was spent in Hawaii and Indonesia. After college I worked as a community organizer on the South side of Chicago focusing on improving living conditions in poor neighborhoods.

I came to understand that to truly solve the problems facing our communities, it would take a change in our laws and our politics. I ran and served for seven years in the Illinois state Senate, where I fought for expanding children’s health care, providing tax cuts for the working poor and enacting welfare reform. In 2004, I was elected to the U.S. Senate, where I have worked to pass laws securing dangerous weapons and making government more accountable. I have also opposed the Iraq war from the start, and believe that we need to bring our troops home by March of 2008 so we can refocus on the wider struggle against terrorism.

Of all my life experiences, I am most proud of my wife Michelle and my daughters Malia and Sasha.

Public hope he would be there residing the White House to bring not only the USA but also the world to a peaceful, harmonious and prosperous life.

Obama began his first Florida campaign swing in eight months with a downtown Tampa rally for 15,000 supporters, the start of a three-day tour aimed at introducing the senator from Illinois to core general-election constituencies.

… Obama spent Wednesday along the Interstate 4 corridor, a heavily populated swath in central Florida, as part of an effort to introduce him to Democratic voting blocs that may not know him well. In Kissimmee, outside Orlando, he held a town hall meeting in a Puerto Rican neighborhood. On Thursday, Obama will speak at a Boca Raton synagogue, and on Friday he is to deliver a speech about Cuba and Latin America in Miami.

… At the Tampa rally, Obama credited Clinton as a worthy opponent, but his main focus was on McCain, who has held an edge in this GOP-leaning state, and who has been a frequent presence.

… “He has been spending the last week describing his foreign policy by explaining who he won’t talk to,” Obama said. “That’s your foreign policy? He basically wants to perpetuate the same errors George Bush has made.”

He also traded barbs with McCain over ethics. “We need a president who sees the government not as a tool to enrich friends and high-priced lobbyists, but as the defender of fairness and opportunity for every American,” Obama said in Tampa.

“It is good to be back. I know you’ve been holding down the fort,” Mr. Obama told a boisterous crowd of about 15,000 at the St. Pete Times Forum in downtown Tampa. The rally was his first public appearance in Florida since September, although he attended two fundraisers in November.

“I am here to report that my debt has been paid off and my faith in the American people has been vindicated because everywhere I go people are standing up and saying we’re ready for change.”

… Mr. Obama repeatedly tried to link Mr. McCain with the Bush administration, saying, “We have a chance in November to bring an end to [Hurricane] Katrina incompetence” and the “failed economic policies of George W. Bush.”

He also blasted Mr. McCain on the Iraq war and skyrocketing gasoline prices and accused the senator from Arizona of having cozy relations with lobbyists, highlighting Mr. McCain’s proposal 10 years ago to bar lobbyists from working on campaigns.

“John McCain then would be pretty disappointed in John McCain now, because he hired some of the biggest lobbyists in Washington to run his campaign,” Mr. Obama said.

… Mr. Obama also picked up a key local endorsement yesterday when Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio announced for the first time that she was backing the senator from Illinois.

“He is gifted in his ability to bring everybody together, and that’s what this country needs,” said Mrs. Iorio, who helped introduce the candidate at this campaign stop.

Reps. Kathy Castor and Robert Wexler, Florida Democrats, also preceded Mr. Obama on the Tampa stage.

… The senator from Illinois was just 64 delegates short of the 2,026 needed to clinch the nomination, after two superdelegate endorsements yesterday and a pair of primaries the previous night.

The Obama campaign has announced that they are opening another two offices in Montana in advance of the June 3rd primary.

Campaign officials announced that offices in Wolf Point and Whitefish are now up and running, bringing the total number of offices in Montana to an even dozen.

A press release issued by the campaign states that the newest offices are “another sign of Senator Obama’s commitment to reaching out to Montanans and working hard for every vote, the campaign announced that it is building on the strong organization in Montana by bringing in additional staff who worked on the Oregon primary”.

The campaign also announced that next week it will release Senator Obama’s agenda “to strengthen rural Montana “with a plan that’s aimed at addressing the concerns of Montanans living in rural communities.

… The campaign will be holding a grand opening event on Saturday, May 24th beginning at 10:00 a.m., and residents are being invited by the campaign to pay a visit.

South Dakota Women for Obama will make phone calls, send e-mails, knock on doors and host house meetings to talk about Obama and why they support him in the primary and November’s general election if he becomes the Democratic nominee.

The group is being led by Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin, D-S.D., who said Obama was raised by a single mother with the help of a grandmother, who worked hard to keep the family afloat.

“As a father working with his wife, Michelle, to raise their two young daughters, he understands how important it is to build a better future for all women,” Herseth Sandlin said. “As president, Barack Obama will work to make life better for women.”

… “He speaks with such admiration about what his own mother did and her role in being an exemplar, not only for him but for other women, and about his wife and daughters,” said Miller, who recently joined the Democratic Party to vote for Obama in the primary.

Ann McGovern, daughter of former South Dakota senator and presidential candidate George McGovern, said she supports Obama because he opposed the Iraq War before the invasion.

… “I’m the mother of three sons and now the grandmother of three grandsons, and I grew up in a household where my father was in politics from the time I was a young girl,” McGovern said. “I very strongly support him for his approach to diplomatic solutions to world problems.”
